How like a (Fig) Leaf

چکیده
In light of work by Donna Haraway, Jacques Derrida and Hélène Cixous, this paper weaves a poetic response to the Western ethnocentric mode thought as that which cuts once forever line dividing nature from culture. That elevates Man over all other creatures, indeed living things, does so means phallic imaginary deeply tied Judaeo-Christian ontotheology – shame, nudity original sin. Through figure fig leaf, essay affirms earthly earthy field sexual links rather than divides categories, disciplines forms life.

How to Be a Fig
The 900-odd species of Ficus (20, 21) constitute the most distinctive of the widespread genera of tropical plants. Figs have (a) a complex obligatory mutualism with their pollinating agaonid fig wasps, yet are found in almost all tropical habitat types and geographic locations [this sets them apart from ant-acacias (63-65), euglossine-orchids (24,26), moth-yuccas (45, 88, 89,), ant-epiphytes (6...
متن کاملHow to be a fig wasp.
In the two decades since Janzen described how to be a fig, more than 200 papers have appeared on fig wasps (Agaonidae) and their host plants (Ficus spp., Moraceae). Fig pollination is now widely regarded as a model system for the study of coevolved mutualism, and earlier reviews have focused on the evolution of resource conflicts between pollinating fig wasps, their hosts, and their parasites. ...
متن کاملSeasonality of Leaf and Fig Production in Ficus squamosa, a Fig Tree with Seeds Dispersed by Water
The phenology of plants reflects selection generated by seasonal climatic factors and interactions with other plants and animals, within constraints imposed by their phylogenetic history. Fig trees (Ficus) need to produce figs year-round to support their short-lived fig wasp pollinators, but this requirement is partially de-coupled in dioecious species, where female trees only develop seeds, no...
متن کاملHow a leaf gets its shape.
Leaves are formed from a group of initial cells within the meristem. One of the earliest markers of leaf initiation is the down-regulation of KNOX genes in initial cells. Polar auxin activity, MYB and LOB domain transcription factors function to keep KNOX out of the initiating leaf. If KNOX genes are expressed in initial cells, leaves fail to form. As the leaf grows away from the meristem, its ...
متن کاملArabidopsis leaf plasma membrane proteome using a gel free method: Focus on receptor–like kinases
The hydrophobic proteins of plant plasma membrane still remain largely unknown. For example in the Arabidopsis genome, receptor-like kinases (RLKs) are plasma membrane proteins, functioning as the primary receptors in the signaling of stress conditions, hormones and the presence of pathogens form a diverse family of over 610 genes. A limited number of these proteins have appeard in pr...
